Installation Project

In her book A Room of One's Own Virginia Woolf argues that in order to be creative, an individual needs space. In this four week project you are asked to define what such a space might be for you: and make and occupy it for a short time within the Department of Architecture and Spatial Design, Spring House, Holloway Road, London N7.

INSTRUCTIONS

Decide on and describe a precise kind of space/activity that is important for your creativity at this stage in your studies. It could be room for contemplation, repose, performance, display, convivialityÉ.

Map the parameters of this space. It must relate closely to your body dimensions and boundaries, and can only be big enough to contain one person comfortably.

  1. Identify and then adapt an appropriate location within Spring House. This space should already have relevant qualities for your preferred Ôroom' (quiet/noisy, open/enclosed, light/dark, protected/exposedÉ.) Note that your chosen home must not interfere with the everyday running of the school.

  1. Carefully describe the programme of this space; the sequence and range of body positions you will undertake in it and the supporting elements required. Is it for yoga, sleeping, dancing, reading, playing music? What platforms, plinths, support, sound, light does it need?

  1. Design and make the room's containment and furnishings. This can only use found objects or paper/card/cardboard/textiles. Gain rigidity and strength through contouring, folding, reinforcing.

  1. Use the least possible materials to make a room, Only enclose what is essential to your activity.

  1. We support collapsibility, transience, sustainability. Resources are limited and these spaces are temporary insertions, claiming individualised spaces from the wider group of ASD for just a short period ( we, and they, can't afford more).

  1. Make it beautiful. It should be lightweight in form but substantial in content.

  1. Record your processes as you go.

This project is part of a wider series of activities dealing with the relationships between space, the individual and the group focussed through a conference and exhibition at Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany from 11th to 13th March 2005.

The best of our installations will be displayed at this event via a variety of potential media including photographs, posters, e-mail and web-cams.
