ACADEMIE SCHLOSS SOLITUDE , STUTTGART

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AND SPATIAL DESIGN, LONDON METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY, LONDON

The artists residency can be said to exemplify a room of one's own: it offers precisely space, time and resources to enable untrammelled contemplation on, and development of, an individual's creative practice.

It provides - albeit for a short period of time - an immensely privileged space. At the same time, individuals are taken out of their 'normal' context, isolated (in a vacuum?) and potentially removed from the very stimuli that has generated their creative work.

But then they are professional artists: they can take it - even make work out of it.......

The school in general (and its foundation course in particular) takes mainly students who have not been privileged by either education or social background; and who have no or little previous experience of art or design. They struggle for space, time and resources to undertake their studies, and the school struggles with them.

But, then again, they have already made themselves some room................just beginning.
